The Second Talk
Aug 19, 2025
A couple of days after having The Talk with my father, I called to let him know how proud I was of him and how well he handled himself. I was impressed. He quickly said “thanks” then began telling me of his friend who is already walking well after a full knee replacement. I barely got in the “Oh, that’s great…” before he let me know that with the medical advancements coming down the pike, he won’t need to do much of the life planning we discussed.
Oh boy.
There will be backsliding and dragging of feet and a reasonable resistance to The Talk. It’s hard. It’s hard for my father. It’s hard for me. It’s hard for my sisters. But it is necessary for the family. Ignoring gravity doesn’t prevent things from falling to the ground.
I / We must remember to be sensitive while still making progress. This isn’t about getting everything all ticked and tied in one go (note: Walley World has its own vernacular, apologies and thanks). This is about doing the right things consistently throughout the year and years to ensure that our future is more secure. That’s moving our family, forward…
